Asphalt plant paves way for further growth at historic aggregates firm

Mendips-based aggregates firm Wainwrights has completed its new £9m asphalt plant near Bristol, increasing capacity for the historic firm and ensuring further growth.

The plant, financed by Barclays, has been built on a 4.5-acre site at Avonmouth is within a mile of the regional motorway network, so opening up access to new markets for the firm.

Founded in 1891, Wainwrights supplies high-quality stone, premium aggregates, asphalt and other materials from its quarry at Stoke St  Michael, near Shepton Mallet.

The firm employs 170 people – a figure set to rise as the new facility comes on stream.

Chief Executive Peter Barkwill said: “The new facility is a bold move for our company and represents an important milestone for our business.

“The investment will allow us to continue to strengthen our reputation across the UK for quality, service and efficiency and we have ambitious plans for the future.”

Barclays corporate banking relationship director John Squier added: “This is an exciting time for Wainwrights and marks another significant step in developing the company’s future capabilities.

“The funding we have provided is just one example of how we work with our clients to structure financial solutions to support their long-term plans.”
