Three Bath-based subsidiaries of international engineering consultancy BMT have gained national recognition for encouraging the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians in schools around the city.
The firms – BMT Defence Services, BMT Hi-Q Sigma and BMT Isis – topped the Organisation of the Year category at the recent regional STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) Ambassador awards.
Some 17 staff across the three businesses have become STEM ambassadors to help enthuse young people about the subjects and promote careers in the sectors by staging activities in schools.
The ultimate aim is to help plug the UK’s skills gap in STEM subjects by sharing expertise with students and get them interested in the subjects to a level that they might then consider further study and careers in these areas.
BMT Group sector director for defence David Bright said: “The UK relies heavily on its manufacturing and engineering industries, and strength in STEM subjects is key to our future success and prosperity.
“BMT’s work, in conjunction with the efforts of others, helps to promote STEM subjects in a positive light, with the aim of encouraging future generations of potential employees to pursue these subjects, guaranteeing the pool of resources required to deliver BMT’s engineering business.”
BMT’s STEM ambassadors scheme, which started as a pilot in Bath, will now be rolled out across the group, which primarily works in the defence, energy and environment, marine risk and insurance, maritime transport and ports and logistics sectors.
The STEM Ambassador awards were staged by Graphic Science, a communications and education consultancy based near Bristol specialising in taking STEM subjects to a range of audiences.
