Bath Business News Expert Panel: Why we’re backing the Forever Friends Appeal

In the latest Bath Business News Expert Panel article, Steven Treharne, managing partner of Bath-based Mogers, explains why the law firm is a passionate supporter of the Royal United Hospital’s (RUH) Forever Friends Appeal.

There aren’t many who go through life untouched by The Big C. One in three of us will be struck by the disease, while most will know a friend or relative affected by cancer.

Mogers is delighted to have adopted the Royal United Hospital’s (RUH) Forever Friends Appeal as our charity of the year.

On May 18, Mogers, along with other local businesses and community members, will enter a team for the Forever Friends Appeal’s Walk of Life.

We are also proud to sponsor the event which is a celebration of the life and memories of loved ones. Our common aim is to help raise money to build a new Cancer Care Centre at Bath’s RUH. Like so many, we too have been touched by the disease – all of us at our Queen Square offices know someone affected either directly or indirectly.

We also feel it’s important to support the community and do what we can as part of our day-to-day work to help others. Simply having an office in the community isn’t enough – we want to be part of the community we serve. We are local people with a strong sense of place; proud to work in Bath and believe passionately that the community is at the heart of all that we do.

I’m particularly proud of and impressed by our legal assistant Mel Hunter’s efforts for the appeal. Five years ago she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma after a 12cm tumour was found in her chest wall. To mark the five years since her successful treatment and also her 40th birthday this summer, she had all her hair shaved off her head raising thousands of pounds for the Forever Friends Appeal.

As Mel explains on her JustGiving page: “This RUH Cancer Care project is a wonderful opportunity to make an immense difference to cancer services and improve the patient experience immeasurably.”  Hers was the first of many fund-raising initiatives for Mogers in 2013.  With the walk on May 18, you don’t have to complete the whole 21 miles from Devizes to Bath but can join the morning section of Devizes to Bradford-on-Avon, which is 12 miles, or the afternoon from Bradford-on-Avon to Bath which is nine miles.

Supporting the Forever Friends Appeal is only one way in which we are there for our community. We are a very busy office, but dedicate time to acting as trustees of a number of local charities, while some of our team do other valuable work in the community, for example, as school governors and non-executive board members of voluntary organisations.

But I make no apology for plugging the Forever Friends Appeal. Raising £5m for a new cancer care building is going to be hard work in challenging economic times but with the support of businesses, families and the community I have no doubt it will succeed. The campaign will create – here on our doorstep – one of the best centres for those affected by this dreadful disease and be available to help you or your friends if needed.
