Plans have been submitted for a new state-of-the-art home for the City of Bath Sea Cadets to safeguard the long-running charity and community organisation’s future.

Its existing headquarters in St John’s Road need urgent and extensive repairs. The new bespoke facility planned for the site would ensure the Cadets remain in the city centre in a riverside location, helping ensure the unit’s long-term survival.

The plans include 18 studio flats which would be rented to students to fund the redevelopment.

The City of Bath Sea Cadets have given young people the opportunity to go out to sea, learn to sail, row and canoe since 1946, helping them acquire life skills and get a head start in life.

Children as young as 10 – girls and boys – can join the organisation’s junior section with the senior cadets open to those aged 12 to 18.

City of Bath Sea Cadets president vice-admiral Sir Edwin Horlick said: “After considerable internal consultation and review of the options available, we have come up with a scheme which we believe is an excellent fit for Bath and will preserve the long-term future of the City of Bath Sea Cadet Unit.

“It will ensure that this fantastic community resource remains in the city centre in a riverside location so we can continue to support young people in pursuing their passion for a whole range of nautical activities.

“City of Bath Sea Cadets, a place where young people learn life skills and make lasting friendships, is a valuable community and social resource for the whole of the city so it is vital that it is future-proofed for many years to come.”

The plans include demolishing the current premises to create a new state-of-the-art building as well as a new, modern slipway and pontoons.

The new building will have bespoke accommodation for the Sea Cadets’ administrative, tuition and training needs, including male and female showers and wardroom facilities on its ground floor with 18 studio apartments for the postgraduate student rental market on the two upper floors.
