Bath-based landscape architects Grant Associates have been selected to work on a major regeneration project in Birmingham which will include a series of new streets and public squares around some of the city’s historic buildings.

The 68,800 sq m Paradise Circus scheme forms part of a wider £450m masterplan for Birmingham city centre. Grant Associates beat off stiff competition to secure the work.

Director Peter Chmiel said: “This is a high-profile project right in the heart of Birmingham and the public realm is a vital part of it. Grant Associates looks forward to working with the team and will ensure that the public space creates the best possible setting for this development and its wider environment.”

Behind the scheme are London-based property development group Argent and Birmingham’s Glenn Howells Architects. The site lies between the city centre’s Centenary and Chamberlain Squares and will include 1.8m sq ft of new offices as well as a new hotel.

Argent managing partner David Partridge said: “All the entries were of the highest quality and clearly followed the brief to create a world-class public realm that would complement the listed historical and contemporary new buildings.”

  • Grant Associates was also presented with two awards at MIPIM last week – the international commercial property gathering. Its Gardens in the Bay scheme won in the Best Innovative Green Building category and the Special Jury Award.
