Bath Ales holds its annual Biking Bonanza on Saturday June 9 to raise money for the FAB (Frenchay After Burns) Children’s Club – with participants in the 13-mile ride being offered a halfway stop for a barbecue at the brewer’s new head office.
Hare House in Warmley is the mid-point on the Bristol and Bath Railway path and cyclists taking part – whether they start from Bristol or Bath – will be able to take a break for food and drinks against a backdrop of live music. There is also a raffle, stalls and children’s activities.
After the festivities they can either carry on in the opposite direction or head back to their starting point.
The Bath Ales team taking part in the ride is led by head brewer Gerry Condell, who set up the Biking Bonanza five years ago after suffering a burns injury. While receiving treatment at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol he learnt about the FAB children’s charity.
FAB, which is run by volunteers, takes burn-injured children on activity camps where they can make friends and relate to children who have been through a similar trauma.
The brewery, best known for its Gem bitter, has already raised more than £15,000 for FAB and Gerry is also undertaking a mammoth sponsored walk of more than 70 miles from Bath Ales’ recently-opened Oxford pub, The Grapes, back to the brewery, via its nine pubs and bars.
Fundraisers taking part in the Biking Bonanza can either start at the brewery’s Hop Pole pub in Bath or in Gardiner Haskins’ car park in Bristol. They need to meet at 10 am to start at 10.30am
Entry costs £12.50 – free for children under 16 years. Non-cyclists are welcome and can sign-up for just £10.
