Budget 2012: Chancellor pledges to back business

Chancellor George Osborne opened his Budget by saying it will 'unashamedly back business."

The Budget will "reward work". Britain "is going to earn its way in the world", he said.

Britain is "not immune" from developments in the eurozone, he said.

He also said a million more jobs will be created over the next five years, according to Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The OBR also slightly revised up growth forecasts to this year to 0.8% this year and 2% next year. But last year it forecast 2.5% in 2012.

Inflation will fall to 1.9% by next year, the Chancellor added. However public sector net borrowing rises by a larger-than-expected £15.2bn, up from £8.9bn last year.

Small firms will be taxed on the amount of cash passing through their businesses rather than more complicated methods used for large companies, Mr Osborne said.
