Chance to shape the future of Bath’s gasworks site ahead of plans to redevelop it as new city quarter

Plans to redevelop Bath’s former gasworks as a new neighbourhood with hundreds of homes are to go on display to the public at a series of consultation events.

The historic site off Windsor Bridge Road, pictured below, helped power the city from the early 19th century until the late 20th century.

It has been decommissioned for a number of years but is currently underused.

Developer St William, a joint venture between the housebuilder Berkeley Group and National Grid, believes it has capacity for between 625 and 675 new homes alongside public open space, non-residential uses, a sustainable transport route and areas dedicated to ecology.

The site forms part of the wider Bath Western Riverside area, which is being transformed into a high-density residential development, including 1,500 new homes.

More than 800 homes have been built as phase 1 of Western Riverside by Crest Nicholson, along with public open space, business units and infrastructure.

Now St William is committed to developing the next chapter in its evolution and fully realising the once-in-a-generation potential of the site.

It said its proposals will “mediate between the Georgian character of Bath and the industrial heritage of the Western Riverside Quarter, adopting a contextual but transformative approach”.

The scheme will feature a variety of mixed tenure homes, non-residential uses and landscaped spaces “each with sustainability, community and wellness at their heart”.

A public exhibition of St William’s plans will take place over three days later this month, with a further exhibition and other engagement and consultation activities ahead of the submission of a planning application to the council later this year.

St William said feedback from the events will help shape its plans.

Members of its team will be available at the events.

The team includes internationally renowned architecture practice Grimshaw, which has a long relationship with Bath having designed Bath School of Art and Design, the Thermae Bath Spa and the planned Stadium for Bath.

Other members are award-winning landscape architects Murdoch Wickham, which have particular expertise in urban regeneration, and Bath based stakeholder and community engagement specialists Creatrix, along with Turley, Montagu Evans, Vectos, WSP and Ecology Solutions.

The public exhibition will be at Green Park station foyer, Green Park Road, on

  • Wednesday 23 February: Noon – 4pm
  • Thursday 24 February: Noon – 4pm
  • Saturday 26 February: 10am – 4pm

All information available to view at the public exhibition will also be online from February 23 at www.bathgasworks.com
