Professional forager and garden writer Dave Hamilton is today out to prove there is such a thing as a free lunch when he signs people up for a free walk around Bath to discover the wild food available for free around the city.

Dave, who has written for BBC Gardener’s World Magazine and co-authored the Self-Sufficient-ish Bible, is staging free wild city foraging walks as part of today’s Flavours of the West festival at Milsom Place.

He is one of a number of experts at the festival which also includes gardening tips from Jon Wheatley from Stonebarn Landscapes in the Chew Valley. Jon is the brains behind the extraordinary RHS edible gardens at the Hampton Court Flower Show and the winner of 14 medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Award-winning organic cheeses will be on offer from Park Farm in Kelston, while, in the Octagon, Sam’s Kitchen will be offering artisan deli delights at its pop-up Festival Club offering charcuterie, locally-grown vegetables and home-grown pork.

But the festival is not just about food. Award-winning Wraxall Vineyards, with established vines dating back 35 years, is taking part. The Loire grape is happy growing in the depths of Somerset while its younger vines are used to produce a Pinot Noir Rose.

Beer-lovers can sample real ale favourite Gem, Bath Ales’ bitter-sweet flagship amber ale, Dark Side, its chocolaty stout, and the more esoteric flavours of Ginger Hare.

  • Dave’s wild food walks, depart at 11.30am and 1.30pm.
