Bath Building Society has appointed Robert Derry-Evans to succeed Chris Moorsom as chairman with effect from January 1 next year.

Robert, pictured, who joined the board as a non-executive director this June, has extensive experience in leading a substantial international legal practice – he was a partner in City of London law firm CMS Cameron McKenna for more than 20 years and its firm’s managing partner from 1994 to 2001. He also ran the CMS alliance of European law firms from Brussels and latterly Frankfurt from 2002 to 2008.

Chris Moorsom was due to retire in April this year but agreed to continue in the role to the end of this year due to the illness of Terry Fussell, who was due to become chairman.

Bath Building Society chief executive Dick Jenkins said: “Robert has some excellent qualities and experience that will be valuable to the society in his new role. I look forward to working with him in this new capacity.”

Robert Derry-Evans is a member of the society’s nomination and remuneration committee. His roles outside the society include sitting on the Board of Trustees of Cobalt Health, a medical charity based in Cheltenham, and chair of Bath- Based Omnia Legal, which operates a web portal supplying commoditised legal services.

He lives in Bath and is a keen bridge player, golfer, theatre goer and Bath Rugby season ticketholder.

Bath Building Society, which was established in 1904, has more than 10,000 savers, 1,200 mortgage customers and employs around 45 staff.
