Bath-based magazine and website group Future has announced a new-look executive management team as it continues to slash costs and restructure the business.
The group, whose print portfolio ranges from Total Film to Xbox: The Official Magazine and owns websites such as musicradar.com, recently sold most of its sport and craft titles to Bristol-based rival Immediate Media for £24m and its auto titles to Kelsey Publishing for up to £2.9m. Further disposals are expected.
Future has admitted its major restructuring and job cuts will not turn around its finances until at least its next financial year. It is on track to axe around 200 out of its 900 staff.
Future chief executive Zillah Byng-Maddick, pictured, described the management shake-up as creating the “right team for the next stage of the Future journey”.
As previously announced Richard Haley will join as chief financial officer in October, having previously held a number of senior roles at Tesco.
Nial Ferguson is appointed content and marketing director with responsibility for creating the type of content that Future has become known for as well as marketing brand strategy and plans to support the business. He joined Future in 2008 and under his stewardship Future has established itself as the UK’s leading consumer technology media company. Nial will also be accountable for Future’s award-winning events team.
Jeff Turner has joined as commercial director for advertising. HeJeff has a 16-year career in media, including senior commercial roles at Telegraph Media Group and KGB. Jeff will oversee all advertising commercial functions – including commercial planning, ad ops and commercial content creation.
Paul Layte was appointed commercial director for consumer revenues in May this year. He was previously at Carphone Warehouse and brings technology and retail experience. Paul oversees circulation, subscriptions, digital editions, trade marketing, affiliates, consumer and product insight, data strategy and international licensing.
Emma Harvey, who joined in June, leads the newly-created product and technology team, as product and technology director. She is responsible for Future’s strategy and execution across IT architecture, product management across all its channels and the development and UX teams.
Michael Venus joins as HR and communications director responsible for developing Future’s people and communication strategies. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the media sector.
Charlie Speight continues as senior vice president of Future US, having been promoted to this role in April. Charlie has worked at Future for nearly two years with a background in product and technology and the games industry.
