Renewables industry pioneer Prof Juliet Davenport will join entrepreneurs, researchers and students at the University of Bath next week at an event advising how to set up and run a business in an ethical and sustainable way.

Prof Davenport, pictured, founded Good Energy in 1999 as a fledgling entrepreneur with a clear purpose to give consumers the power to tackle climate change by choosing renewable power.

One of the UK’s first 100% renewable electricity suppliers, today the Chippenham-headquartered business has more than 50MW of solar and wind assets and has also moved into the fast-growing electric vehicle services market, spearheaded by its acquisition of Zap-Map.

She will speak at one of the events run by the university which will celebrate and mark Global Entrepreneurship Week 2022, a worldwide event established in 2018 to encourage, advise and support millions on people of all ages and backgrounds through local, national and global activities.

Prof Davenport, who earlier this year received an honorary degree as Doctor of Business Administration from the university, will discuss how businesses and start-ups must work harder than ever before to operate in a greener, more sustainable way for the benefit of themselves, their clients, and the planet.

She said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to speak at the University of Bath Global Enterprise Week and that such weight has been given to the issues of business sustainability, renewable energy and the climate.”

Having stepped down as Good Energy’s CEO last year, Prof Davenport now works with industry, innovation and research organisations, advising on the ways towards a cleaner, greener future.

She has also recently published The Green Start-up – Make Your Business Better for the Planet, described as an essential toolkit for modern entrepreneurs.

The University of Bath works with businesses, researchers and students to enable new ideas, innovation and growth under its Enterprise and Entrepreneurship community and strategy.

Vice-president for enterprise Prof Jonathan Knight said: “It is six months since our inaugural Enterprise Day so is very timely to be continuing to engage with our stakeholders and celebrating entrepreneurship.”

Prof Davenport will speak next Thursday, 17 November, from 6 pm. Free places can be reserved here

Sustainability is also the core theme of an event on Monday for student entrepreneurs, who will be invited to discuss how it can be integrated into their business ideas.

A panel discussion on Tuesday titled My Entrepreneurial Journey will be led by University of Bath director of external engagement Stephen Rangecroft while on Wednesday would-be student entrepreneurs can also join a Dragons’ Den-style pitching contest, giving them a chance to win direct investment into their start-ups.
