Wincanton, the Chippenham-based logistics group, has won a major contract with car parts and bike retail chain Halfords to be sole operator of its national transport contract.

Under the contract, which goes live this summer, Wincanton will operate more than 80 vehicles distributing Halfords products from its base in Coventry, as well as five sites around the UK including Portbury, near Bristol, to its 460-plus stores.

Wincanton won the contract after working on an initial distribution project to establish more efficient delivery management for the retailer, which is also a leading independent operator in garage servicing and auto repair.

Wincanton, the UK’s logistics largest business, will also focus on cutting costs throughout Halfords’ supply chain.

No financial details of the contract have been disclosed.

Wincanton chief executive Eric Born said: “From the beginning of our consultative relationship with Halfords, we have worked hard to develop a deep understanding of the business and build strong relationships.

“We’re excited to now be working so closely with such a well-known and well-loved British brand, ensuring its customers receive the highest levels of service and quality.

“Wincanton provides services for many of the major retailers in the UK and we’re acutely aware of the challenges they face in a multichannel era.”

In May Wincanton renewed its long-standing transport contract to run food giant Heinz UK’s transport, warehouse and repack operations until at least 2019 – taking the two businesses’ relationship beyond the 20-year milestone.
