The Manufacturing Advisory Service has appointed a supply chain specialist in the South West to ensure that manufacturers gain a significant share of the lucrative opportunities presented by the UK’s burgeoning offshore wind market.
Nick Kirsop-Taylor, pictured, will help firms tap into the recently-launched £20m GROW:OffshoreWind service that supports companies looking to break into the industry or existing players aiming to win more contracts. 
Forecasters say the UK offshore wind industry will be worth more than £100bn over the next 20 years. The industry was boosted last week when the Government said it would increase subsidies for offshore generation projects in preference to onshore wind farms.
With each wind turbine requiring nearly 3,000 components, there are many opportunities for small and medium-sized manufacturers to join the supply chain and provide hydraulic parts, bearings, steel fabrication, cabling, electrical systems and composites.
Nick joins the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) following a 12-year career as a project manager, including with RegenSW and Plymouth University’s pioneering 20M project which is building a logistics/supply chain tool for the offshore wind industry.
He said: “I am committed to helping South West companies understand the scale and opportunities presented by the dynamic and fast developing global offshore wind industry.
“The UK has the capacity to become a global player in the manufacturing of components for offshore wind; we have the drive and technical capability. My hope is that manufacturers in the region seize the chance to play their part in fulfilling this potential.”

GROW:OffshoreWind is being delivered by experienced industry experts from MAS, renewable energy trade association RenewableUK, accountants Grant Thornton and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre at the University of Sheffield.
Manufacturers can gain access to a unique joined-up package of consultancy, technology and funding support through the service.
MAS is funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and works with businesses to develop a culture of innovation, generating new product ideas and market opportunities. Many of its services are free and supplemented by appropriate grant funding.
