An interactive evening of pop-up art talks, life drawing, hands-on demos and an art showcase is promised later today as Bath School of Art and Design hosts ‘Up Late: Drawn to the Holburne’.
Students from the school, part of Bath Spa University, are taking over the Holburne Museum between 5pm and 9pm this evening, giving visitors after-hours access to the Grade I listed galleries and garden.
Events during the evening will include:
- Drinks and Draw: Grab a glass and try your hand at drawing a costumed model in the Garden Café.
- Masters Draw: Meet the university’s talented postgraduate art students, see their artwork, and hear about how drawing relates to their practice as they plan for their upcoming final degree show.
- Elastic Space: See the future of drawing in 3D space and try your hand at drawing using the latest computer technology.
- Pop-up Talks: Tim Vyner, senior lecturer in illustration at Bath Spa University and official illustrator to the London Olympics, discusses how he captured the Street Child World Cup with a series of reportage illustrations created ahead of the World Cup. Also hear from more Bath School of Art and Design artists and tutors as they explore the future of drawing.
- Tania Kovats ‘Talking Drawing’: British artist Tania Kovats discusses the role of drawing in her work before leading a tour of the drawings in the Museum’s galleries.
Bath Spa University head of field of research, enterprise and postgraduate Graham McLaren said: “We’re excited to be hosting an eclectic evening that is sure to engage and entertain all those who join us, whether you know a little or a lot about the art of drawing.
“This one-off event gives students and staff the perfect opportunity to collaborate and expand their personal and professional development in a truly unique setting.”
Attendees will be able to hear more about the university’s plans for the future of drawing in the school, including new undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize led by the executive dean of the school Prof Anita Taylor.
There will also be an opportunity to view world-class exhibition, Prized Possessions: Dutch Masterpieces from the National Trust Houses – a collection of 22 Dutch masterpieces on display in an exhibition dedicated to National Trust paintings.
Admission to the special late-night exhibition is £10 on arrival and includes a cocktail. Resident DJ Pablo Tinte will also be playing summer songs into the evening.
In 2013, Holburne Museum announced its partnership with Bath Spa University, which builds on a long-standing relationship between the two institutions. Students and staff from the University’s MA Heritage in Context and BA Education courses have also delivered successful Up Late events and workshops at the public art gallery.
