Bath Building Society has appointed David Smith as a non-executive director to serve on its main board and three of its committees.

Mr Smith, pictured, a chartered accountant, was a financial services partner with accountancy firm KPMG in London from 1995 to 2006, having joined the firm in 1983. He then became head of group audit at Man Group, the London Stock Exchange-listed alternative asset manager, for six years.

He is currently an independent member of the Audit Committee at The Health Foundation, a national health care charity based in London.

Mr Smith serves as chair of Bath Building Society’s Audit Committee and also sits on its risk and nomination committees.

Society chief executive Dick Jenkins said: “We have always looked to recruit high-quality individuals to our board and it has been gratifying that the society has been able to appoint a well-qualified board member that is distinguished in his field who can hit the ground running.

“He has a lot of skills to add to the board in finance and audit but it has become clear in our first few weeks of working together that David will make a big contribution beyond those specialist areas.”

Established in 1904 to offer savings, investments and mortgages to the local community, Bath Building Society today has more than 10,000 savers, 1,200 mortgage customers and employs around 50 staff.
