A Grade I listed Georgian townhouse used as an upmarket venue for weddings and other events has come onto the market with a guide price of £950,000.

Parade House, pictured, on Fore Street, Trowbridge, was built in around 1720 for the wealthy cloth merchant Robert Houlton and is one of the town’s finest buildings.

It is being sold freehold with by specialist business property adviser Christie & Co, which said the property had been sympathetically restored and refurbished by the current owners and had become a popular and versatile venue for weddings, film screenings, fine dining dinners, afternoon teas, conferences and private functions.

As a result, it now boasted a reputation as one of the most prestigious venues in the area.

The four-floor property offered a selection of elegant, generously proportioned rooms with high ceilings, sash windows, marble fireplaces and detailed ceiling covings, all quintessential of the Georgian period, Christie & Co said.

It also boasts a wealth of original period features, including a grand 18th-century carved oak staircase and a first floor ballroom.

Its ballroom, the venue’s largest entertaining space, spans the entire width of the house and is filled with natural light from seven full-height sash windows, two fireplaces and four large chandeliers.

Recent additions include a stylish private bar, lounge and luxurious cinema in the historic vaults, with raked seating and a state-of-the-art interactive screen and sound system, along with a large event kitchen on the top floor.

There is also a landscaped lawn area at the front of the property and off-street parking for six cars.

The business is being sold by Carey and Simon Tesler, who said: “We are immensely proud to have saved this magnificent building which was near-derelict when we bought it almost three years ago.

“It has been a privilege to restore it to its former glory and create an exciting and prestigious new venue for Wiltshire.

“The events business has surpassed our expectations, generating enormous goodwill within the region, and winning a series of awards including Best Event Venue in Wiltshire 2024 and The FSB Best Start-up Business in the South West 2024.

“It is time now for us to pass the mantle to a new owner who has the vision and expertise to take Parade House to the next level as a luxurious events venue, and to build on the many opportunities lying ahead.”

Christie & Co senior broker – hotels Sam Roberts, who is managing the sale, described Parade House as “an elegant and historical treasure in the heart of a county town”.

He added: “It has been beautifully and painstakingly refurbished by the current owners and provides a versatile offering for an incoming buyer to continue the success of the current business model or to utilise the building in different ways.

“It’s a rarity to see buildings like this come to the market in such good condition and therefore we expect lots of interest in this opportunity to purchase a slice of history in this sought after area of Wiltshire.”
