Engineer Roy Qullliam, technical director at Bath-based BMT Defence Services, is being recognised as one of the highest scorers in a certificate scheme for company directors.
He is shortlisted for the SW Institute of Directors (IoD) Director Development Award as one of this year’s top performers in the IoD’s Certificate in Company Direction.
The certificate encompasses the core knowledge and awareness necessary to function effectively as a director. Roy, who joined BMT in 1990 as a senior engineer, is up against three other candidates from Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire for the award, which will be announced at a dinner on Thursday, June 6, at Bristol’s Marriott Royal Hotel.
Prior to joining BMT, which produces complex engineering and design capabilities for UK and international defence customers, Roy worked on submarine and surface ship design projects for the Ministry of Defence and other organisations. He was appointed as BMT’s technical director in 2003.
He is a Chartered Engineer and has fellowships with the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology. He also chairs the industrial advisory board for the mechanical engineering department at the University of Bath, is a member of the Lloyds Register Naval Ships Technical Committee and is chair of the Industry Steering Group for the MoD Naval Design Partnership.
Among the key areas needed for the IoD certificate are:
- An in-depth view of the role, responsibilities and legal duties of a director
- An understanding of the characteristics of an effective board
- Sound knowledge of financial terms and concepts
- The issues and processes associated with formulating strategic and business plans and achieving strategic leadership.
All the candidates are now on the first step towards Chartered Director, the IoD’s ‘gold standard’ for professional directors.
The South West’s IoD Director of the Year Awards 2013 seek to highlight outstanding business people and celebrate achievements across the region, bringing all parts of the enterprise community together and focus UK-wide attention on South West success.
As well as the Director Development Award, the categories include Director of the Year, Young Director of the Year and Corporate Responsibility.
Next Thursday’s awards dinner is sponsored by Bristol law firm Burges Salmon.
