Environmental development firm Engain has helped a major reclamation project on Gibraltar get the green light – the consultancy’s latest project in a 20-plus year partnership with the territory’s government.

The Frome-based firm, which specialises in projects involving the environment, ecology and climate change, provided environmental guidance to Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar on the 60,000 sq m harbour area reclamation project, pictured

The scheme will open up new land on the west and east sides of the Rock, utilising rubble that has built up over several decades.

Engain’s experts provided extensive environmental scoping, design and assessment work for the government, resulting in it receiving planning consent earlier this month.

It comes just over six months after Engain helped deliver a project to upgrade the iconic cable car station at the top of the Rock of Gibraltar while also protecting its famous Barbary apes and other wildlife.

Engain was appointed to the reclamation project by HM Government of Gibraltar in 2017 to advise on its environmental issues, to inform community decision-making and perform an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

Engain, whose other recent projects have included the development of a £10m luxury hotel on Drake’s Island in Plymouth Sound and Wiltshire’s first biogas energy plant on a site near Warminster, will continue to work with the Gibraltar government throughout the project to manage compliance with environmental protection laws and sustainability criteria.

Engain managing director Nikki Wood, pictured, was project EIA director for the reclamation and presented information and answered questions relating to environmental issues at the development and planning commission hearing on Gibraltar ahead of its approval.

She said: “We have been working with Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar over 20 years and were honoured to advise on key environmental and sustainability issues surrounding the reclamation project.

“We are delighted that the project has been given the green light and look forward to working alongside HM Government of Gibraltar as the works progress.”

Engain’s team of environmental scientists typically work with clients such as governments, local authorities, architects, developers, utility providers, and planners on schemes with construction values ranging from £10m for bespoke residential developments to more than £500m for national infrastructure and mixed-use strategic sites.
