Bath software and IT services company IPL has launched a rural apprenticeship scheme. Called Bright, the three-year programme is looking for school leavers from a predominantly rural background who have a keen interest in IT and want to kick-start a career in the thriving industry while working towards their NVQ.
Bright apprentices will join IPL’s internal IT department where they will be the first line of support for IPL’s 300-plus staff when they have computer problems. 
This work will build the apprentices’ expertise in this fast-changing field, leading them towards a place in IPL’s pool of developers who work on cutting-edge projects across a diverse range of sectors, from banking and finance to the public sector.
Apprentices will be required to use their IT know-how to troubleshoot computer and network issues, offering support in person, over the telephone and by email. They will also be assisting with the rollout of new computer systems and helping ensure critical data is safely backed up.
IPL business services director Lyn Penfold, who oversees HR and corporate social responsibility at the company, said: “This scheme is a fantastic way for bright young people to apply their knowledge and enthusiasm for IT in a dynamic and growing company. We provide a great learning environment and support our apprentices as they work towards their recognised qualifications.”
One of the apprentices already on the scheme, John Gay, added: “The experience I’m getting from working at IPL alongside my NVQ is immensely valuable and I find I’m learning new things every day. The scheme mentors are incredibly supportive and being able to get involved in the running of a busy IT department from day one has been brilliant. I’d recommend the scheme to anyone interested in a career in IT.”
IPL works with clients in a wide range of sectors including banking, finance, telecoms, utilities, local and central Government, oil, gas and pharmaceuticals. Clients include Nationwide, UCAS and Lockheed Martin.
