Bath banker Ryan Thomas has raised just under £12,000 for schools in a remote part of Kenya with his latest cycling feat – a gruelling 15-day, 1,485-mile trek from the UK to Rome.
Ryan, who works for Barclays Corporate in Queen Square and has completed a number of charity bike rides for Maji Safi Projects, a Bristol-based group which provides school facilities, teachers and support for families and their children in two Kenyan villages.
His latest funded a bus to allow more children to attend the school as it is often too far away for children to walk. The vehicle will be an additional source of income for the village by enabling them to hire it out at weekends.
Barclays matched funded each pound raised through its community investment programme and a number of Bath firms got behind Ryan’s fundraising efforts including Stone King Foundation, Morris Owen, Withy King, Exceed UK, Monahans, Lemon & Co and Alder King.
Ryan said: “This is a great cause supported by a small dedicated committee which has been working tirelessly since 1999 to improve education for young people in Kenya. I am already planning my next charity bike ride in 2012.”
