The University of Bath has made two appointments to its senior management team with Professor Jonathan Knight joining as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), and Professor Peter Lambert as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).
Prof Knight, pictured right, is the Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science, a position he has held since 2013. He will take on his new post from August 1 for a three-year period, and will succeed Prof Jane Millar, who has fulfilled the role with distinction for the past seven years.
Prof Knight said: “It’s an honour to be taking the role in these exciting times. The REF results demonstrate how much outstanding work has been done at Bath, and I’m looking forward to working with our excellent academic and professional staff to make sure that our research continues to grow and thrive.”
Prof Lambert, pictured below right, the Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, take up his new post on July 1 for four years. He succeeds Prof Bernie Morley, who started in his new role as the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Provost last month.
Prof Lambert said: “It is a great privilege to be entrusted with this role. Bath has established a tremendous reputation over the past decade as a leader in the field as highlighted by our consistently high positions in national league tables.
“I very much look forward to working with students and colleagues from across the University to ensure that learning, teaching and the student experience as a whole will continue to flourish alongside our world-leading research.”
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dame Glynis Breakwell added: “I am delighted to welcome both Jonathan and Peter to the senior management team, and look forward to working closely with them as we head towards our 50th anniversary next year.
“They will be able to build on the excellent work and results achieved by both Professor Jane Millar and Professor Bernie Morley in the past few years.
“Their promotion is testament to the wealth of talent we already have here at the university.”
Prof Knight joined the University in 1996 as a lecturer in the Department of Physics having previously been a postdoctoral researcher at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton.
He completed his PhD in 1993 at the University of Cape Town before working as a research fellow at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.
He held the position of Head of the Department of Physics at Bath from 2008 to 2013. He was the founding director of the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials and has published over 200 peer-reviewed journal papers in top-flight international journals.
Prof Lambert joined the university in 2000 as head of Spanish in the Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies (Polis). He had previously worked as a senior lecturer at the UWE.
He has worked as a teacher, political researcher and public translator in Paraguay and completed his PhD in Latin American Politics in 1998, and was President of The Society for Latin American Studies 2007-2009.
He has held the role of Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching) in the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences since 2010 and has led many new pioneering initiatives to improve the student experience at Bath.
