A University of Bath student has been named as one of the most promising undergraduates in the built environment sector.

Safa Al-Hamali, who is studying BSc Hons Architecture, was described by the judges of the Women in Property South West Student Awards 2024 as having the “potential to have a big impact on the industry”.

They also praised Safa, pictured, second left, with Women in Property South West chair Rachel Holmes, fellow winner Freya Killilea and vice-chair Maddie Difazio-Wright, for giving a fantastic presentation, adding that she could expect “a very bright future”.

Formed in 1987, Women in Property is the influencing and networking organisation for the property and construction industry, with a focus on mentoring, outreach, professional development, networking and industry influence.

It has more than 1,600 members at all stages in their careers in 14 branches across the UK.

Its South West Student Awards, which were sponsored by Atkins Realis, Hydrock and Mace and staged in Bristol, provided employers in the property and construction sector with a platform to engage with some of the brightest and best undergraduates in the region.

Safa and fellow winner Freya Killilea, who is studying Meng Civil Engineering at the University of Exeter, will now go through the national final in September, where they will compete against 12 other students from across the UK.

Women in Property South West chair Rachel Holmes stressed the importance of supporting and recognising local talent.

She emphasised the ongoing collaboration between universities and businesses in the region to nurture skilled professionals in the face of a persistent skills shortage and gender imbalance in the industry.

The Women in Property Student Awards programme, which is sponsored nationally by Amazon, Bouygues UK, Savills and tp bennett, aims to showcase top-performing built environment students and highlight the diverse career opportunities within the industry.
